Import File Encoding Requirements
File format
Import files must be saved as CSV (comma-separated values). Other file types aren't accepted.
Character encoding
Save your file as UTF-8. That keeps special characters, like accented letters and curly quotes, intact.

UTF-8 |
Correct. Use this. |
|
UTF-8 with BOM |
Works. The BOM is removed when you upload the file. |

Windows-1252 / ANSI |
Special characters are replaced with during upload. Basic English characters are fine. |
How to save as UTF-8
Excel (Windows)
- Go to File → Save As (or Save a Copy).
- Under Save as type, choose CSV UTF-8 (Comma delimited).
If you don't see that option, your version of Excel doesn't have it. Use Google Sheets or Notepad++ instead. For more detail, see Microsoft's Save a workbook to text format.
Excel (Mac)
- Go to File → Save As.
- Under File Format, choose CSV UTF-8 (Comma delimited).
Only the sheet you have open is saved. For more detail, see Microsoft's File formats supported in Excel for Mac.
Google Sheets
- Go to File → Download.
- Choose Comma Separated Values (.csv).
For more detail, see Google's Download a file.
Notepad++
- Open the file.
- Go to Encoding → Convert to UTF-8. Don't use the plain UTF-8 option, which only changes how the file is displayed.
- Save the file.
For more detail, see the Notepad++ manual's Encoding page.
Before publishing, check the Excel for Windows steps once in your own copy of Excel. Microsoft's official page doesn't name the CSV UTF-8 option.
